The Hawaii Hotspot is a geological term for a specific area where volcanism occurs. This shouldn’t be confused with Hawaii’s other hotspot, cosmopolitan Honolulu, located on the southern shore of O'ahu.

Honolulu’s multiple attractions include Waikiki, with its iconic crescent beach, high-rise skyline and extinct volcano, Diamond Head, looming in the distance.

Unlike Diamond Head, however, Waikiki is always active, regularly erupting with shop sales, restaurant openings and vibrant nightlife. An even edgier neighbourhood in this cultural melting pot of 400,000 inhabitants is Chinatown – worth exploring for its eateries, market stalls and bars.

If you prefer more sedate sightseeing, get a bird's eye view of the city from Aloha Tower, visit the USA’s only royal residence, ‘Iolani Palace, or Honolulu’s Museum of Art.

Some natural endowments are nearby as well. Hike the cool trails of the mist–shrouded Ko'olau Range for spectacular city views, or wend your way through the Lyon Arboretum, with its fascinating tropical plant life.
